Skeeters. Flies. Strange very large bugs. They're out in force chewing on our pets this summer.

What to do? Any human repellents containing DEET are bad for pets. But here are some more natural ways to repel bugs according to Kristen Temo, DVM at the Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals:

"Wipe your dog down with dryer sheets or diluted Avon Skin So Soft bath oil. White vinegar and water mixed in equal parts, with a drop of cedar, lavender or lemon oil added to a quart of the vinegar-water mix is another option.

"Other products are sold on the Internet using various blends of oils. While some essential oils are quite safe to use on dogs, you should heavily dilute most, and several can cause illness and even death. Pet stores sell sprays and shampoos containing oils like citrus or tea tree oil, but these are highly diluted.

Finally, the best advice is to simply keep your dog out of a bug-infested environment!"
