Mountain lion sightings reported in Ohio - Bellefontaine Examiner

After receiving at least two calls Thursday morning about the animal, the Brown County sheriff's office learned a resident bought a mountain lion at a flea market and it had gotten away about a month ago.

Authorities say one woman saw the animal through binoculars and another caller reported a loud growling noise near a landfill some 40 miles east of Cincinnati.

Experts say attacks on humans are rare but possible by mountain lions, also called cougars, pumas or other names. They will go after pets and are fast and agile.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says people sometimes buy exotic pets and realize they made a mistake when they try to keep them at home.

East Bay animal shelters to give away pets - San Mateo Daily Journal

Posted: 29 May 2010 03:59 AM PDT

BERKELEY — An East Bay foundation will spend up to half-a-million dollars in a two-day drive to find homes for shelter animals.

Maddie's Fund, the largest organization in the country dedicated to making all shelters no-kill, will pay at least 38 shelters $500 per animal adopted on June 12 and 13. The shelters are in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Maddie's Fund President Richard Avanzino said that in addition to helping pets find homes, the $500 per animal will act as a kind of stimulus package for shelters.

Animals shelters charge adopters far less than $500 to adopt a pet, so they will be making money from the event.

Avanzino said Alameda and Contra Costa counties could lead the nation in ending euthanasia for healthy dogs and cats.

Urgent News please help disseminate widely to alert Centreville Virginia residents - Examiner

Three neighborhood dogs have been poisoned by a person or persons unknown.

Two of the pets have died and one is ill. The three separate incidents occurred in the 15100 block of Olddale Road in Centreville, Fairfax County, Virginia.

One of the dogs, loving companion Lucy, was given to Jackie Samiotis for Mother's Day six years ago. Another, owned by neighbors across the street, was a puppy just five-month's old that the couple had only recently brought home. The police report the puppy had ingested a meatball laced with an unknown poison that had apparently been tossed over the fence and are urging residents to keep a close eye on their pets, keeping them indoors if possible.

Resident, Ms. Samiotis, had let Lucy outdoors to play Wednesday afternoon, but when she let her back in for her nap, she noticed something was terribly wrong with her pet. Lucy began seizing severely, and in spite of her efforts, including rushing her to the vet, Lucy passed away. One can only imagine how horrible it must be to lose a beloved pet this way.

Bewildered and no doubt heartbroken, with no explanation for her pet's death, Ms. Samiotis searched her backyard and discovered two raw meat patties, one partially eaten.

Police have taken samples of the meat to be tested.

As Ms. Samiotis said in an interview with Channel 8 News, "It's horrible, and I'm worried about all these other dogs. It's a family neighborhood, there's a lot of dogs. And people think they're safe in the backyard."

Animal control officers will be in the neighborhood looking for possible suspects and more evidence related to this horrible crime.

Please be vigilant, supervise your pets while outdoors and keep your vet and poison control numbers next to the phone.
