| Take precautions to keep pets safe in hot weather - Ithaca Journal Posted: 24 May 2010 08:30 AM PDT Hot, humid weather can have a detrimental effect on pets, particularly dogs in cars or chained outside. Pets can suffer brain damage, heat stroke or even death. To protect your pets, the Tompkins County SPCA urges all pet owners to: * Make sure dogs and other pets have access to shade. * Make sure there is plenty of cool, fresh water to drink. * Do not leave older pets, pets with health problems, or short-nosed dogs like pugs outside in the heat. * Most of all, do not leave your dog unattended in a parked car. Temperatures in a parked car can quickly reach more than 120 degrees, even with the windows partially open. The following signs are association with heat stress: heavy panting, glazed eyes, vomiting, staggering or unsteady gait, rapid pulse, or deep red/purple tongue. If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, you must lower its body temperature immediately by: * Getting the animal in the shade and applying cool water (not ice) all over its body. * Letting the animal drink small amounts of water. * Contacting your local veterinarian for care and treatment. If residents see an animal trapped in a hot car, they are asked to call the SPCA at 257-1822. Five Filters featured article: The Art of Looking Prime Ministerial - The 2010 UK General Election. | Your pets need extra care as arctic cold front ... - Examiner Posted: 24 May 2010 08:30 AM PDT Companions For Life is reminding everyone of the need to take special care of your pets as an arctic cold front slides into North Texas tonight. Pets need shelter from the elements just like we do, so bring your pets indoors during bad weather. Or you can't bring your pet into your home, consider making a spot in your garage with a warm bed, food, and water. If your pet absolutely must stay outdoors, make sure you provide a solid shelter to protect them from the wind, and be sure the inside of the shelter stays dry at all times. Adding hay or old blankets will help keep your pet warm. Puppies and senior dogs are too fragile for extreme temperatures and should not be left outside. Pets outdoors in the cold need to eat more, too, so put out an extra helping of food. Be sure to check your pets water bowls often to make sure it does not freeze over. Clean up any antifreeze that drips from you care - antifreeze is very toxic to all pets. And be vigilant when walking your dog as salt and chemicals used to melt snow and ice can harm your pet's sensitive paw pads. The City of Dallas has ordinances designed to protect pets from the elements. All pets are required to be confined in your home or your yard, or on a leash, at all times. Dogs cannot be left tied up outdoors on a rope, chain, or any type of tether, and dogs outdoors must have adequater shelter - at least 150 square feet, 3 or more sides and it must "provide protection from the elements, allow adequate room for movement and must be structurally sound." If you see a dog in danger in Dallas, call 3-1-1 or contact Dallas Animal Services at 214-670-8246. Outside the City of Dallas, contact your local animal services department, the Humane Society or the SPCA.

| Colorful pets - Ashtabula Star-Beacon Posted: 24 May 2010 06:57 AM PDT May 24, 2010 Colorful petsWildlife Wendy shows of pals who flock togetherASHTABULA — He doesn't have to strut his stuff, but Wazoo the Congo African Gray bird has the star power to pull it off. Wazoo, along with owner and trainer "Wildlife Wendy" Horton and her gaggle of parrots and other birds, have a long list of Hollywood friends and now they are ready to take on the stages of Ashtabula County. "We have been on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' and 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,'" Horton said. "Now we are happy to be back in the area." Horton brought her birds to Brockway Marina on Sunday for Mckenzie Smith's eighth birthday, and took the opportunity to show off Wazoo, Skipper, Haylie, Kasper, Dixie, Pepper and Tango as they whistled, counted, preened, climbed and even pooped for the audience. Mckenzie's grandmother, Susan Smith, said she loves her parrot, named Sylvio Dante, and was excited when she was able to book Horton for the party. "We always have some sort of local entertainment for the kids," she said. "It gives them something to really remember on their birthdays." Originally from Hinkley, Horton moved across the country to attend Moorpark College Teaching Zoo in southern California. A performer and trainer, Horton began training animals for Hollywood, including the movie "Being John Malkovich," ABC's "Grace Under Fire", Disney's "Even Stevens," Nickelodeon's "Brothers Garcia" and many television commercials. In 1995, Horton decided to fly with her own flock and began giving her own shows with her own birds. Homesick for northeast Ohio, she decided to relocate to the area and brought her birds with her. "I do shows at libraries, schools, parties, festivals and just about anywhere else," Horton said. "The audience loves the tricks the birds do, and everyone, everyone loves a talking bird." Birthday girl Mckenzie squealed as Skipper the gold and blue macaw stole the show, using his beak and claws to climb around. "This is awesome," she said. "I really like Tango, I think she was smiling at me. I have never seen birds like this before." Horton said Mckenzie and sister Abbey's smiles are all the Hollywood glamour she needs. "I am happy to be back in Ohio," Horton said. "Ashtabula County is a beautiful place and I am glad to bring my birds to the children here."
