Snake lovers can keep big ones as pets safely, experts say - SW Iowa News

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 07:53 AM PDT

Officers from the Papillion Police Department finally pulled the snake off Byrne and began CPR, but he died later at Midlands Hospital.

Nebraska Humane Society officials later identified the snake as a red-tailed boa constrictor, a type of python.

Mark Langan, vice president of field operations for the Humane Society, said the snake appeared to be well cared for. It is being held by the Humane Society until Papillion concludes its investigation.

Eisel said herpetological societies publish guidelines for handling amphibians and reptiles. One of the guidelines is to never put a snake around your neck.

"We don't condone wrapping a snake around your neck -- ever," Eisel said. "The guidelines also say if you take a snake outside, it should be kept in an enclosure."

Jessi Krebs, curator of reptiles and amphibians for the Henry Doorly Zoo, said it would be extremely rare for a boa constrictor to attack its owner.

"That type of behavior is more typical of a Burmese python," Krebs said.

He speculated that the snake may have felt vulnerable as Byrne handled the animal.

"Snakes like to feel anchored and safe," Krebs said. "It could have utilized its tail to try to secure its position around his neck."

Papillion Police Lt. Chris Whitted said he had seen Byrne walking around Papillion with the snake draped across his shoulders.

A Papillion ordinance prohibits residents from keeping dangerous wild animals, including snakes, but Whitted said he didn't believe the snake fit that description.

"I know that there are a lot of snakes sold legally, and I really never thought anything of it," Whitted said. "If it were a cobra or rattlesnake, that would have been a problem."

In Omaha, it is illegal to keep a snake that's more than 8 feet long. Papillion has no length limit for snakes.

Langan approves of the Omaha ordinance.

"Snakes over 8 feet long can easily get too big to handle," Langan said. "Tragically, that's what might have happened in this case."

Man faces charges for killing, mutilating pet rabbits in N. Adams - Boston Globe

Posted: 12 Jun 2010 10:23 AM PDT

"We hope that news of this arrest will bring some relief to the residents of this quiet community as well as the family who lost many defenseless pets to such senseless and savage acts of cruelty," MSPCA Law Enforcement Sergeant Roy Sutton said in the statement.

The rabbits were found "strewn about" Berkshire County Construction on Ashland Street about 9 p.m. Tuesday, the MSPCA said Thursday. There were signs of a break-in, the MSPCA said.

The business is operated by the family of the pet owner, and the animals were kept at that location, said Brian Adams, a spokesman for the MSPCA.

One rabbit was found hanging by a chain, the MSPCA said. Its ears and tail had been cut off.

The investigation was conducted by MSPCA Law Enforcement and the North Adams Police.

Brackett faces several charges, including five counts of animal cruelty and five counts of malicious killing of an animal. He is also charged with breaking and entering and malicious destruction of property.

The arraignment is slated for North Adams District Court.

Humane Society arranges for free pet food for owners affected by oil spill -- and ... - New Orleans Times-Picayune

JAZZ: The HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES helped arrange for free pet food for Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parish pet owners who are suffering financially because of the BP oil spill. The food is being provided by MARS PETCARE U.S. and the HUMANE CHOICE COMPANY. Shelter providers in the area have seen an increase in pets being dropped off by owners who say they cannot afford to care for them any longer, but this donation might keep other owners from having to make that difficult decision.

JAZZ: WINN-DIXIE STORES INC. delivered a semi-trailer of donated food Thursday to Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana to help out-of-work fishers and their families. The truck was loaded with about 24,000 pounds of food and was the fourth truckload of food donated by the grocery chain since the rig explosion.

JAZZ: SEN. DANNY MARTINY succeeded in strengthening the state's ban against cockfighting by persuading lawmakers to pass his bill making it a crime to attend, pay admission to or bet on a fight. Gov. Bobby Jindal signed the measure last week.
