Pets 101: Hot weather pet alert! - Examiner

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 05:39 AM PDT

Hot weather has hit the Chicago area early this year. Thos of you who own heat-loving reptiles can turn off the heat-lamps but those of us owning birds and mammals need to stay aware of our pets' cooling needs.

  • Any animal kept outside needs access to shade and ample fresh water. Check on your outside animals frequently and bring them inside to a cool area if they seem distressed.
  • No animal should be left in a car, even for "a few minutes" on hot, sunny days—and given the greenhouse effect in cars and vans, anything over about 60 degrees F should be considered "hot."
  • Small, heat-sensitive animals (like my son's ferret) may need to be moved from the upstairs to a lower level or basement if you don't have AC (or, like me, choose not to turn it on for energy-conservation reasons).
  • The concrete floor of a garage provides a good cool surface for your dog if you have neither AC nor a basement.
  • Some pets (dogs especially) enjoy swimming or wading to cool off.

Make sure your pets don't suffer from today's untimely midsummer-level heat.

(ARA) - Feline pet parents take pride in caring for their cat. However, what many think are nutritious food options might not be the best choice for their furry friend. It's often difficult to separate fact from fiction when it comes to nutrition for your cat.

(ARA) - Ask pet owners about their dogs and watch their eyes light up because of the bond they share. After all, Discovery News reports in an August 2009 article that dogs have been man's best friend for some 10,000 years.

(ARA) - Family pets cherish the home environment - it's where they curl up on the living room floor, wait patiently for a treat in the kitchen, and patrol the halls making sure loved ones are safe and sound. Although pets are undeniably loveable, the animal dander and other allergens that accompany these furry friends can jeopardize the well-being of those in the home.

(ARA) - It's a myth that continues to persist: Feeding birds in warm months will spoil them. But birds are like babies - it's impossible to spoil them. Contrary to the myth, well-fed birds won't get too lazy to search for food; they'll just get healthy and happy. And the better the food is you feed them, the more likely they'll continue to come back bringing their colorful plumage and welcome song to your backyard.

(ARA) - You've seen the posters decorating mailboxes, telephone poles and trees in your neighborhood. The picture of a cat - usually curled up in the sun or giving a curious look to the camera - with "LOST" in bold, capital letters and a contact number underneath. Sadly, less than 5 percent of lost cats make it home.

(ARA) - Protecting your pet from harmful fleas and ticks is a vital part of pet care. And since this summer is projected to be unusually rainy and warm, extra caution is needed. Fleas and ticks not only irritate your pet, but are capable of transmitting serious diseases like Lyme disease and flea allergy dermatitis.

(ARA) - Pets are members of our families. They are our best friends and love us devotedly.

(ARA) - When the warm summer months roll around, our dogs are just as eager as we are to get outside and enjoy the season. Whether he tells you by nudging his leash or staring at the door knob, one way or another, your pup knows it's time for some fun in the sun.

(ARA) - Who doesn't love spring? Flowers bloom, trees bud and bright songbirds return to the area. The renewed resurgence of radiant life may make you want to get in on the action.

(ARA) - Ever get the feeling that your dog knows what you're thinking, without saying a word? Many canine parents report that they've had an entire conversation with their dogs despite the obvious language barrier. From "can I have a treat" to "let's go for a walk," dogs have a special way of sharing their feelings. According to a new survey, it's the wags, not words that tell the story when it comes to canine communication.

(ARA) - Pet owners understand extra cleaning is part of the deal when bringing a puppy into their homes and lives. Cleaning up after a dog is enough work in itself, so the last thing any owner wants is a pooch that is agitated by the sights and sounds of cleaning. There are several techniques that can help your dog stay calm when you reach for your sponge and Swiffer.

Tips for protecting your pets in the heat - KSDK

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 07:41 AM PDT

By Kasey Joyce

KSDK -- The heat index Tuesday is expected to top 100 degrees. While that may be unbearable for humans, it can be deadly for your dog.

Humane Society investigator Anne McLaughlin says she has already received dozens of calls this summer about dogs trapped in hot car.

McLaughlin says anytime it is over 70 degrees, you should not leave your dog in the car. It doesn't matter if the windows are down! In just a few minutes, the temperature inside the car can creep up to the mid 100s. At that point, your dog could start panting or vomiting. Eventually if the dog continues to overheat, its internal organs may start to shut down. If your dog shows signs of overheating, put it in a cool (not ice cold) bath. Start by cooling the paws and work to the rest of the body. You may need to see a vet.

Exercising in this heat can also be dangerous. Veterinarian Steven Schwartz recommends walking or running your dog early in the morning or late at night. If your dog isn't used to exercising in the heat, this is not the time to start! Make sure to keep an eye on your pup to make sure it's not getting overheated.

Some breeds, like those with short snouts, cannot handle the heat at all. They can't cool themselves down through panting and so they can overheat very easily.

If you have to leave your dog outside, Schwartz says make sure there is plenty of water and shade.

The Humane Society says if it's too hot for you, it's probably too hot for your pet!
