| Pet Oxygen Masks for Boston Fire Dept. - MyFox Houston Posted: 30 Sep 2010 01:21 PM PDT Updated: Thursday, 30 Sep 2010, 3:26 PM CDT (NewsCore) - The Boston Fire Department will now carry oxygen masks designed for pets to save animals from deadly smoke inhalation during fires, The Boston Globe reported Thursday. "Smoke doesn't discriminate," Steve MacDonald, a department spokesman, was quoted as saying. "It affects everyone that relies on oxygen to breathe. Having a specific mask geared toward pets will go a long way to helping pets survive smoky conditions." MacDonald told the paper that Boston firefighters previously managed with oxygen masks designed for humans, but those masks were ill-fitting on most pets and allowed much of the oxygen to escape. The fire department received 60 pet masks as a donation from WellPet, a Boston-area natural pet food company, and the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association, according to The Globe. "We're proud to donate these pet oxygen masks to the Boston Fire Department, so that the city's firefighting heroes have the tools they need to save the lives of every member of our families, including our pets," Chanda Leary-Coutu, a spokeswoman for WellPet, said. | Pets welcome in some churches - United Press International Posted: 01 Oct 2010 05:56 AM PDT Published: Oct. 1, 2010 at 8:59 AM CHICAGO, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- The pastor of a Chicago-area church said a monthly service where people bring their pets is becoming popular. Marilyn Anderson, a Chicago dog obedience trainer, broached the idea with her minister two years ago after noticing the large number of people walking dogs near her church, the Chicago Tribune reported. The Rev. Paul Dobberstein of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church decided to give the idea a try, the newspaper said. "People who worship at our service usually come back," Dobberstein said. "People want to have their dogs blessed. It makes them feel better." Bethany calls the service "Simple Gifts." It lasts 30-45 minutes. "This is her social time," said Marie Galoney, who takes her dog Rosie to Bethany's services. The services at Bethany and at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation, in Bloomingdale, are modeled after services on Oct. 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, during which pets are blessed at churches worldwide, the newspaper said. "There is a bond between people who come to the service and their pets," said the Rev. Marc Strong of Church of the Incarnation. "We are called to be stewards of God's creation, and pets are a part of that."
