| Gary Bogue: Only give your pets treats that will agree with them - San Jose Mercury News Posted: 25 Nov 2010 12:58 AM PST Chocolate can be poisonous, especially to dogs. It contains theobromine, which is toxic to pets. Gary's Dog Munchies Today is Thanksgiving, so I guess it's time to reprint my homemade dog biscuit recipe. My dog munchies make safe Thanksgiving treats for your pets. They've even been served on more than a few occasions (accidentally?) to humans watching Sunday afternoon football on TV. There have been no harmful effects noted, other than a tendency to whine and growl when the Raiders and 49ers start making stupid plays. To help get you into a holiday baking mood, here is my own personal recipe for Gary's Favorite Thanksgiving-Christmas Dog Munchies, still fresh and delicious after the more than 2½ decades I've been publishing it. Stick it on your refrigerator door: TAKE: about 2½ cups all-purpose flour; 2 cups whole-wheat flour; 2 cups cracked wheat; ½ cup nonfat dry milk; 4 teaspoons salt; 1 package dry yeast; 1 pint chicken stock or other liquid (if you're planning these for Thanksgiving, use turkey stock, of course); 1 tablespoon milk to brush; egg. Warm the chicken stock in a pan. In the meantime, dissolve the yeast in a quarter-cup of warm water, which, together with the chicken (or turkey!) stock, you pour into the dry ingredients. Knead this for about three minutes. Roll the dough into a quarter-inch sheet, then cut with cookie cutters or a knife into circles, trees, tasty cats, dog bones, mail carriers or fire hydrants. (No sharply pointed designs.) Brush a wash of egg and milk onto the pieces as you put them on a baking sheet. There's no need to let them rise beforehand. Place in a 300-degree oven for 45 minutes, then turn off the heat and leave them sitting in the oven for several hours or overnight. They'll be bone-hard and absolutely guaranteed to clean your dog's teeth when properly applied. This treat can be tailored nutritionally any way you or your pet like. A bit of honey or molasses will sweeten them slightly. If your dog is on a salt-free diet, leave that stuff out. To get really fancy, include a half-dozen eggs for a rich, golden batch. If your pet is on a diet, I'm sure your veterinarian can suggest other ingredients. Note: These are treats and not a complete diet. Save Mount Diablo Please send your tax-deductible donation, large or small, to: Save Mount Diablo -- Friends of Gary, 1901 Olympic Blvd., Suite 220, Walnut Creek, CA 94596. This is the last week of our fundraiser and we have only a few days to reach our $100,000 goal. Please surprise me when I get back from vacation! Happy Thanksgiving! | Petside.com Poll Shows Pets Make Vacation Cut - KKTV Posted: 24 Nov 2010 03:01 AM PST Looking for an enjoyable vacation? Take your dog. In an Associated Press-Petside.com poll, 75 percent of pet owners who have vacationed with their animals in the last two years said their pets made the trip more enjoyable. Nearly 90 percent of those people said they would be extremely or very likely to take another trip with their pets. The poll, conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications Oct. 13-20, revealed there aren't a lot of cats on the road -- 74 percent of cat owners said they were not at all likely to take their pets on vacation. As for destinations, 70 percent ended up with relatives, 55 percent with friends and 52 percent in hotels. Four in 10 said they took their pet to a campsite and 34 percent took an RV trip.
