Eco-Friendly De-Icers that Are Safe for Pets, Plants and the Environment - Associated Content

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 09:46 AM PST

If you live where you get snow and ice in the winter you know what a pain and how time consuming it can be to clear it away. And slipping and sliding while trying to get to your car is no fun. In the winter months you
seem to spend all time shoveling and clearing. But what are your options ice on your sidewalks can be very dangerous if you slip. Many people use regular rock salt which can be corrosive to cars and is considered a danger by the Environmental Protection Agency when it seeps into groundwater. Some people use natural products like sand, saw dust, wood shavings or kitty litter on the ice. These will help some with traction but they will not melt the ice. Thankfully there are some companies that offer some Eco-friendly de-icers that will help keep your sidewalks ice free this winter. Here are a few of the best green de-ice products on the market that is safe for pets, plants and the environment.

Ice Melt

This de-icer from the company Earth Friendly Products are the perfect choice if you are a pet owner. This is the mildest ice melt available it is safe for your pets and plants. It comes in a six and a half pound bottle for $12.00. Even though it is safe for animals and vegetation this green product is tough in cold weather, it works in weather as cold as negative thirteen degrees Fahrenheit.

Ice Clear

Next on my list of Eco-friendly de-icers is from the company Monterrey Lawn and Garden. You can get a gallon bottle for $19.95. Ice Clear works best if you spray the liquid right on your sidewalk before a big winter storm hits. This green product is made from corn extract, the sugar in the product reacts with the pavement and forms a bond that prevents ice from sticking. This product is similar to the technology that is used to de-ice the wings of airplanes. It is 100% organic and non corrosive, contains no toxic materials or salts and is biodegradable. Safe for your lawn and trees it will work up to 50 degrees below zero.

Mo Paradise Pets brings exotic birds downtown - San Jose Mercury News

Posted: 08 Nov 2010 06:51 PM PST

SANTA CRUZ — At 57, Mohammad "Mo" Alam has made a living washing dishes in New York, fishing in Alaska, driving a taxicab in Anchorage and running a fast-food restaurant in Sacramento. Then he spent 16 years selling flowers in Santa Cruz, saving enough to buy a house.

Since the economy dried up his flower sales, he's trying his hand at running a pet shop.

Alam, who is the kind of person who can strike up a conversation with anyone, is originally from Afghanistan. He came here after seeing Santa Cruz and its "beautiful" weather on television.

He has a 9-year-old African grey parrot named Baboo, which kept him company at the flower shop. His wife Paige has a double yellow-headed Amazon parrot, about the same age, named Coco Baby Girl.

"She told my wife 10 times 'How you doing, baby girl?'" he said.

The two talking parrots were his inspiration for his latest venture, Mo Paradise Pet, which opened in May at 209 Laurel St., formerly Cimarelli's Plumbing, which moved to 1231 Thompson Ave.

Alam named the store for Paradise Park, where he and his wife live with a menagerie of chickens, pigeons and ducks. Then he added Mo in front of Paradise to avoid confusion with the Paradise Pet Salon at 21501 E. Cliff Drive.

When Sheri Howe retired and closed The Bird Feeder in Santa Cruz last year, that left PetSmart, a chain store on River Street, and Trop Aquarium specializing in fish on the Westside.

Alam said he heard from the mayor that downtown needed a pet shop. He figured he could cater to pet owners living downtown.

"I give them something they can walk in and buy," he said.

He sells birds starting at $10 up to $1,000, and charges 45 cents per pound for bird sees, a price he says can't be beat.

His partner is his wife's cousin, Teak Fowler, 51, who has 25 years experience as a dog groomer, and is a sketch artist besides. Her grooming price starts at $19.99 for short-haired canines; haircuts start at $40 and include clipping nails, plucking ear hairs, and a "fluff and finish."

Business has been slow.

Alam blames the economy and says other shop owners downtown face the same challenge.

Still, he loves Santa Cruz, where he's lived for 18 years, and he's not giving up.

"We have 100 people a day come just to see the birds," he said.

Lupita Martinez, 19, of Santa Cruz, who stopped in for the first time Friday, found the parrots friendly and entertaining.

"These birds are so pretty," she said, as one hopped onto her arm, climbed onto her shoulder and nibbled at her hoop earring.

"We had one for three years then he flew away," she said wistfully.

Eric Gil, owner of Sockshop & Shoe Co. and co-founder of Think Local First Santa Cruz County, contends mom-and-pop stores can compete with national chains three ways: A better environment in which to sell, better products and better customer service.

"We in Santa Cruz love diversity and are not always motivated by size of building and/or price," he said. "In the end we want a unique experience here in Santa Cruz."
