MADISON HEIGHTS – A fireplace is blamed for starting a blaze that drove a Madison Heights couple from their home.

Officials said the man who lives at the house with his girlfriend and three pets woke up early Saturday when they smelled smoke. A short time later a smoke detector started sounding inside the house in the 27300 block of Delton.

"It looks like they had been using the fireplace quite frequently during the recent cold weather," said Madison Heights Fire Chief Kevin Scheid.

The man, who is in the U.S. Coast Guard, called 911 about 6 a.m. Scheid said he, his girlfriend and their pets all got out of the house safely.

The fire caused significant damage to the attic and the family room where the fireplace is located inside the single-story house. There is also smoke damage throughout the house, fire officials said.

The couple reportedly moved to an area hotel for the time being.

Firefighters from Royal Oak and Hazel Park also responded to the fire, Scheid said.

Though creosote from fires in a fireplace can build up and cause unexpected blazes, Scheid said that didn't appear to be the case in the Saturday's fire.

The homeowner told investigators he noticed the wall around the fireplace had recently become discolored, apparently from heat.

"I don't know at this point if there was a failure in the fireplace or if heat conducted into the surrounding wall created the problem," he said.
