LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of dogs and cats living with needy families will get an early holiday present today at a special Holiday Pet Pantry in downtown Los Angeles at PAWS/LA.  Thanks to a generous donation from Los Angeles-based Original Pet Food Company, 500 low-income pet owners will receive a free month's supply of organic dog and cat food ensuring their animals will have healthy, nutritious meals throughout the holidays.

"While many people in Los Angeles struggle to keep their pets fed all year long, the need is even more acute during the holidays," said Pamela Magette, executive director of PAWS/LA which provides services to assist low-income seniors and people disabled by a life-threatening illness keep and care for their pets.  "In fact, LA shelters see a December surge in pets abandoned during the tightest cash flow month of the year.  Original Pet Food Company stepped up just in time for us to be able to help more people and pets during this critical period."

"Recognizing that most people think of their pets as family, we understand how heartbreaking it is when they cannot adequately provide for their animals," said Melissa McGinnis, founder of Original Pet Food Company, which recently introduced the first line of pet meals made from organic, grass-fed beef.  "Original Pet Food Company feels fortunate that we can play the role of Santa Paws to dogs and cats that might otherwise go hungry during the holidays."

PAWS/LA will open its doors at 1150 S. Hope Street, LA at 9 a.m. for the Holiday Pet Pantry to begin handing out cases of Original Pet Food Company product.  Adding to the festive spirit, Santa Paws and his elves will be on hand to greet people and pets.  The Holiday Pet Pantry will be open until 3 p.m., or until supplies last.

Group takes donations for homeless pets - MySanAntonio

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 06:55 AM PST

PICKAWAY COUNTY - Animals at the county dog shelter benefit year-round from the efforts of Partners For Paws volunteers, but Christmas brings an extra push for community support with the Operation: Santa Paws drive.

The program, now in its fourth year, provides a venue for county residents to donate cash, toys, treats and other pet-related supplies to make Christmas a little brighter for homeless pets.

Arron Kerns, organizer for the annual program, said blankets, towels and cleaning supplies also are welcome.

"I spoke with the dog warden to make sure we were all on the same page, and they can definitely use anything along those lines," he said. "They need all those items to make the shelter run, and it all goes to good use."

Operation: Santa Paws collected more than $600 in food, toys and supplies with its debut in 2007 and nearly doubled that amount in 2008, gathering more than $1,200 for the cause.

Donations were down just slightly in 2009, but volunteers still tallied a respectable $1,000 in supplies and cash donations for the dog shelter.

"It would be nice to see us do as well as we have in the past, but with the economy being the way it is, anything anybody can contribute would be very helpful," Kerns said. "I won't put a dollar amount out there because I understand people are having a hard enough time doing what they can to feed themselves and their own animals, but we are definitely thankful for anything we get."

Collection bins are stationed at PBS Animal Health, Jones Groom Room, Scioto Valley Coffee, Tractor Supply, Carnival Foods and Circleville Pet Services.

At Scioto Valley Coffee, Kerns said anyone donating an item for Operation: Santa Paws or Toys for Tots will receive 10 percent off their purchase.

Cash donations can be accepted by contacting Kerns at 207-1444 or by mail to Partners for Paws, P.O. Box 282, Circleville, OH 43113.
