SCITUATE, Mass. -- The homes on Seventh Avenue in Scituate are situated very close together so when a fire started in one of the homes, firefighters were worried it would spread to other homes - and it did.

The flames quickly caught fire to a second home. Many of the people were evacuated to Scituate High School - the shelter filled with pets because it was a pet-friendly shelter. Officials realized the only way to get people to safety in a shelter was to allow them to bring their pets.

Stacks of blankets and dry clothes were provided to keep people warm. A lot of the people who came into the shelter were wet from the weather and floods.

Some residents had to be carried out on a firefighter's shoulders because the water was so deep they weren't able to walk through it or they would have drowned, others said a rogue wave crashed through some of the glass doors they had in their homes as they tried to grab as many belongings as they could before fleeing their home.

SafeHaven deals with more pets during New Year - msnbc.com

ALBANY (KMTR) – It was a busy weekend to start the year for an Albany animal shelter. Staff members at the SafeHaven Humane Society nursed nearly two dozen dogs back to health. Just last week, they took in 20 Shih Tzu's and one Labrador. They were found in pretty bad conditions with a breeder in Sweet Home. Their neglect varied from matted hair to a variety of eye conditions. Most of the dogs have now been groomed, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Officials say they are very sweet and love attention. Christiana Gunderson says, "These guys are very outgoing, very tolerant of being bathed and groomed. So I wouldn't let that scare anyone. They love to be brushed, they love the attention, they absolutely crave the attention. SafeHaven is also working on plans for a new facility. Their current space, along Highway 34, has an outdated drainage system and it's not very sanitary. The cattery is cramped and many of the dogs live in outside kennels due to lack of space. So the nonprofit has bought four acres in Tangent. They need nearly $5-million dollars to update it to meet their needs. They hope to open within two years.
