| Pets are welcome in some upscale hotels - St. Louis Post-Dispatch Posted: Traveling with Fido is never easy, though it doesn't have to be hard. One of the toughest things to do is finding a nice hotel that allows dogs, but we're seeing more and more upscale hotels offering special packages for pet owners. Why? A survey released a few years back by Starwood Hotels & Resorts estimated that of 62 million dog owners in the U.S., an estimated 78 percent of them consider their dog to be an "equal member" of the family. So, of course, travelers need a place to stay with their pooch. Carlton hotel • Discovery's Animal Planet has teamed up with the Carlton hotel in New York to create a "Love Your Pet" package, for guests who wish to stay at the hotel with their dogs. This package includes all of the amenities you would need to pamper their pet, including a dog house, blanket, bowls, leash, treats, and more. The package (in addition to the regular room rate) is free through March 14. After that it's an additional $50. A portion of the proceeds from each of the Love Your Pet packages booked will be donated to Animal Planet's cause-related initiative, R.O.A.R. (Reach Out. Act. Respond). Showboat Atlantic City • Starting Thursday, Showboat becomes the first dog-friendly casino in Atlantic City. Upon arrival, pups are welcomed with treats, food and water bolws, a doggie mat, waste bags and a keepsake duffle. The pet program is open to dogs only and allows a maximum of two dogs up to 50 pounds per room. The cost is $40 per night, but the fee will be waived during the first two weeks of the program. W Hotels • At check-in, you'll receive a welcome packet with the following items, designated for either a dog or cat: toy, treat, clean-up bags, letter with pet services in the city, custom pet bed, food and water bowls, and a special treat at turndown. The cost is $25 a day over the room rate plus a nonrefundable $100 cleaning fee. Only one pet per room at no more than 40 pounds. Hotel Monaco • The boutique Hotel Monaco (in San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, DC and more) takes the term "pet friendly hotel" to a new level. All sizes of pets are welcome at no fee. All pets get a welcome toy and in-room pet supplies: food and water bowl, bed and more. | New Pet Apps for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad Help Keep Pets Healthy on the Go - Yahoo Finance Posted: Press Release Source: LifeLearn, Inc. On Monday February 21, 2011, 8:47 am EST GUELPH, Ontario, Feb. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- MyPetED™ mobile applications for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, launched today by LifeLearn, Inc., offer dog and cat owners a secure spot to keep vital pet information handy at all times. It's the first app that allows pet owners to maintain a complete profile of their pets' health background, instantly contact their veterinarian, and access other helpful services for their pets. Created as an extension of www.MyPetED.com, a new web site resource for pet owners that LifeLearn launched in January, the MyPetED apps also allow pet owners to browse more than 100 pet health articles written by veterinarians, adopt a pet through pet rescue shelters across the country, post a lost pet within the network, and locate the owner of a missing pet. "The MyPetED app can be especially valuable in urgent pet health situations," said James Carroll, CEO of the veterinary division of LifeLearn, Inc. "Imagine a dog owner traveling with her dog, which suddenly starts to shake and vomit. The owner clicks on the MyPetED app on her iPhone and finds an article on vomiting in dogs and cats, which not only gives her good information but also directs her to contact her veterinarian. "She then uses the MyPetED app to locate an emergency veterinarian in her area, and when she arrives, she has access to her pet's medical history: vaccinations, screenings, current medications, weight, diet, last veterinarian visit, and previous health problems. This is just one of the many scenarios that MyPetED apps are designed to support." MyPetED cannot replace a veterinarian's care, but it can provide access to credible information that pet owners and veterinarians can use together – particularly when so much misinformation is available on the Internet. With the MyPetED web site and apps, veterinarians will have to spend less time re-educating their clients, and pet owners will be more empowered to make good pet health decisions based on veterinarian recommendations. Dr. Lynn Buzhardt of The Animal Center in Zachary, Louisiana, said, "There's nothing better than this app for busy, conscientious pet owners who want to keep up with their pet's care. I'd be delighted to have my clients enter our exam rooms with insights into their pet's condition, as well as a complete picture of their pet's medical history. When I ask questions about a pet's medical history, owners often don't know the answers. The MyPetED app can eliminate these issues for veterinarians and equip them to better care for their patients." MyPetED apps for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad are available in the iTunes App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mypeted-pet-health-center/id420014716?mt=8.
