Firefighters say a barking dog and meowing cat helped them find an 11-year-old boy who was trapped in a burning home in east Charlotte Thursday morning.

The dog and about 20 other pets died in the two-alarm blaze, but the boy was rescued by firefighters who charged through thick smoke and flames and found the youth in a second-floor hallway of the family's split-level house off Idlewild Road.

Kevin Boardman, a fifth-grader at nearby Idlewild Elementary School, was in critical condition Thursday night at a hospital in Columbia, where he was airlifted after being treated earlier in the day at Carolinas Medical Center, fire officials said.

"He is fighting for his life," Charlotte fire Capt. Rob Brisley said.

"The barking dog and a meowing cat alerted firefighters to where the boy was," Brisley added.

Parents Cindy and Bob Boardman and Kevin's 13-year-old brother, Tim, were taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center, where they were in fair condition Thursday night, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 5:30 a.m. at the house on Springfield Drive at Boston Avenue, a few hundred yards from the elementary school. The first firefighters to arrive, from Station 3 on Monroe Road, arrived four minutes after the call was received and found smoke pouring from the windows and doors.

By 5:45 a.m., flames were shooting from the upper level of the house, and a second alarm was sounded, with crews from Station 29 on Margaret Wallace Road called to help.

Neighbor Tracey Brandon told WCNC-TV, the Observer's news partner, that the parents and older sibling escaped the blaze and then started screaming for the younger boy.

"They were yelling at him to wake up," Brandon told WCNC.

Two cats survived, officials said.

The house appeared to be destroyed, and the Charlotte chapter of the American Red Cross said it was prepared to help the family find shelter. Brisley said the fire caused $150,000 in damage and appears to be accidental. WCNC-TV contributed.

Firefighters battled flames in a house fire in Grimes Thursday night.

Several departments were at the scene in the 600 block of Southeast Ewing Street.

A mobile home caught fire, officials said, and smoke could still be seen billowing out of the home as of 10 p.m.

No one was injured, but several pets are unaccounted for, firefighters said.

A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
