COLUMBIA, Mo. — When Allison Frisch goes shopping this summer for furnishings to decorate her freshman dorm room at Stephens College, she will look for a comforter for her and a matching doggie bed for her roommate. Frisch will share her room with Taffy, her 10-year-old Shetland sheepdog. And Stephens, a women's college, says it is glad to have them both. Frisch is one of 30 incoming freshmen who asked to bring a family pet to campus. That represents an increase of 20 over last year's freshman class — so many that the college is renovating a dormitory for the students and their companions. The dorm, dubbed Pet Central, will have a makeshift kennel on the first floor, staffed by work-study students who will offer grooming services and temporary boarding. With these efforts, Stephens hopes to smooth the transition of some students who might be so anxious about leaving home that a stuffed animal will not be of sufficient comfort. A growing number of colleges are putting out a welcome mat for pets. They include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the State University of New York at Canton, Eckerd College in Florida and Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania. "It's harder and harder for students to leave home," said Dianne Lynch, president of Stephens. "Bringing this particular piece of home with them may make that separation easier." Read Melanie Payne's blog and more stories by our Watchdog team1:10 A.M. — It took the May 25 death of Bailey the pug to push Gina Brashear of Lehigh Acres over the edge. Bailey was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull. According to Lee County Sheriff's Office reports, Gator the pit bull "continued mauling on the deceased pug" for almost a half-hour after deputies arrived. When Gator finished with Bailey, he reportedly came after the officers, who shot and killed him. Brashear, who owns the Affordable Animal Care Clinic in North Fort Myers, said pit bulls frequently attack smaller dogs. "We've seen a dozen in the last year, with the owners running in with (their pets) in their arms," Brashear said. "And we've saved two of them." That's why Brashear says it's time for Lee County to take drastic action. "I'm for banning pit bulls, banning the breed," Brashear said, as some communities have done. This seemed odd to me given that Brashear has two pit bulls. Brashear said her dogs are pets. That's not the way a lot of people use the breed, she said. "They're used for fighting and guarding," she said. "It's a people problem. But if we can't do away with bad owners, we need to get rid of the breed." Ria Brown, spokeswoman for Lee County Domestic Animal Control, says it isn't that simple. "Banning won't do any good. It's not the breed, it's the owner," Brown said. "If you banned pit bulls, they would get another breed and make them dangerous." Gator and his registered owner, Lorenzo Hood, had un afoul of the law before. Hood has a long history with Lee County law enforcement. Although most of Hood's troubles involve traffic offenses, he is fighting charges of grand theft and cocaine possession, among other crimes, according to police records. Hood's phone number was no longer in service and he couldn't be reached. Gator had once been picked up by Animal Services for running at large. Hood paid for Gator to be vaccinated and licensed, along with a $168 fine, and Gator was released. The second fine for running-at-large when he killed Bailey was $268.
