1:10 A.M. — It took the May 25 death of Bailey the pug to push Gina Brashear over the edge.

Bailey was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull. According to Lee County Sheriff's Office reports, Gator the pit bull "continued mauling on the deceased pug" for almost a half-hour after deputies arrived. When Gator finished with Bailey, he reportedly came after the officers, who shot and killed him.

Brashear, who owns the Affordable Animal Care Clinic in North Fort Myers, said pit bulls frequently attack smaller dogs.

"We've seen a dozen in the last year, with the owners running in with (their pets) in their arms," Brashear said. "And we've saved two of them."

That's why Brashear says it's time for Lee County to take drastic action.

"I'm for banning pit bulls, banning the breed," Brashear said, as some communities have done.

This seemed odd to me given that Brashear has two pit bulls.

Brashear said her dogs are pets. That's not the way a lot of people use the breed, she said.

"They're used for fighting and guarding," she said. "It's a people problem. But if we can't do away with bad owners, we need to get rid of the breed."

Ria Brown, spokeswoman for Lee County Domestic Animal Control, says it isn't that simple.

"Banning won't do any good. It's not the breed, it's the owner," Brown said. "If you banned pit bulls, they would get another breed and make them dangerous."

Gator and his registered owner, Lorenzo Hood, had un afoul of the law before. Hood has a long history with Lee County law enforcement. Although most of Hood's troubles involve traffic offenses, he is fighting charges of grand theft and cocaine possession, among other crimes, according to police records.

Hood's phone number was no longer in service and he couldn't be reached.

Gator had once been picked up by Animal Services for running at large. Hood paid for Gator to be vaccinated and licensed, along with a $168 fine, and Gator was released. The second fine for running-at-large when he killed Bailey was $268.

Some Colleges Accepting Pets -- No Need For Them To ... - Huffingtonpost.com

Students say being around them has a calming affect, makes them to laugh and eases homesickness. No, they're not talking about the newest designer drug but a furry friend who, at some colleges, is allowed take in dorm life with its owner.

The New York Times reports from Stephens College in Missouri, which has seen a 20 percent increase in students requesting to bring their pets with them to school. The college complies -- and is even fixing a dorm nicknamed Pet Central for human/animal coeds.

Students attest that having a pet at school can ease the transition from home to college life. Colleges are beginning to agree with that notion -- campuses that allow pets range from Stephens to MIT to tiny Eckerd College in Florida.

The Times has more on the trend, and how it might make some schools more attractive to potential students:

While about a dozen colleges have explicit policies permitting pets of some kind -- Eckerd even allows snakes, provided they are "less than six feet long and nonvenomous" -- [Stephens College President Dianne] Lynch predicts that that figure will soon rise.

"Colleges will begin to recognize that this is important to students," she said, adding that in an increasingly competitive recruiting market for top students, becoming known as pet-friendly is another way for a college to differentiate itself.

True to form, Stephens and other colleges do not hesitate to bar pets from campus should they elicit noise complaints. Some schools even established Pet Councils to process issues. There's also the lingering problem of pets being abandoned on campus once the school year lets out, as Fox News reported in 2009.

What do you think? Would you bring your pet to college? Leave a comment with your opinion.

RESPIT Immunotherapy Targets Seasonal Allergies in Pets ... - Earthtimes

LOS ANGELES, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Allergy season is bad for all allergy sufferers, but for pets, whose fur actually attracts pollen and dust, seasonal allergies can cause itching and be particularly miserable. Immunotherapy is the only treatment that targets the airborne allergens, like pollen and dust mites, that most often cause allergies in pets. Now board-certified veterinary dermatologist Jon Plant, DVM, DACVD, has introduced RESPIT? (http://www.vetrespit.com), immunotherapy specific to a pet's geographic location that does not require allergy testing.

"Consulting with veterinarians across the country, I realized the limitations of allergy testing were preventing many pets from receiving immunotherapy, or allergy shots. Yet studies suggest that knowing precisely what a pet is allergic to is not necessary," Dr. Plant, founder of SkinVet® Clinic, LLC, explained. "RESPIT allows veterinarians to prescribe immunotherapy to counter the most important allergenic substances found in a region, rather than relying on test results that are often questionable. Veterinarians and pet owners have embraced this practical approach, which is based on a study conducted 20 years ago."

As the first regionally specific immunotherapy for cats and dogs that can be prescribed without allergy testing, RESPIT has captured the attention of veterinarians across the country -- including Dr. Marty Becker, who featured RESPIT in a Good Morning America segment about seasonal allergies in pets on June 3, 2010 (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Pets/deal-allergies-pet/story?id=10811285).

RESPIT requires a prescription and thus is available only from veterinarians, but people can administer RESPIT to their cats or dogs themselves in a series of weekly shots. Improvement in pets' itchiness is usually evident within three to six months, and 75% of pets eventually respond well to immunotherapy.

"RESPIT was developed for use in my own veterinary practice," stated Dr. Plant. "I am pleased to be able to make this advanced, cost-effective immunotherapy available to other veterinarians nationwide."

IMG Licensing, a division of IMG Worldwide, the global sports, entertainment and media company, announced today that it has been selected by Halo, Purely for Pets, to expand the company's U.S. brand licensing program.

Halo, Purely for Pets, is co-owned by Emmy® award winning talk show host, comedienne, actor, producer and writer Ellen DeGeneres.

IMG Licensing will utilize its proven, world renowned expertise to extend the Halo brand into multiple dog and cat categories, including identifying and signing licensees for dog beds, travel and related accessories, functional and fashionable apparel, collars, leashes, toys, grooming, training and agility items, crates, carriers and containment products, bowls, social expression and pet insurance.

"We are very excited about our new association with IMG Licensing," said Steve Marton, Chief Executive Officer of Halo, Purely for Pets. "We are very proud of the Halo Brand and what it stands for, and as such, very sensitive as to whom we partner with. After a very diligent evaluation of IMG, the quality of their people, their exemplary track record of success and their pet specific experience gave us a high degree of confidence that they would be the right strategic partner for us."

"We are extremely pleased to have been selected by Halo to represent their outstanding brand," said Tim Rothwell, IMG Executive Vice President and Co-Managing Director, Worldwide Licensing. "Over the past two decades, Halo has grown and prospered while setting the standard for wholesome, natural, quality pet foods and pet care products. We are confident that building on the work of Ellen DeGeneres and Halo's visionary management we can help increase brand impressions and visibility with consumers in new and exciting ways."

Founded in 1986 with the mission of providing people and their pets with honest information and wholesome products to better the lives of animals and the people who love them, Halo, Purely for Pets, continues with their belief that premium quality ingredients and commitment to holistic pet care separate them from their competitors.

The addition of Ellen DeGeneres as an owner of the company in 2008 represented a defining moment in the history of the company. At that time Ellen said she was honored to be part of a company "that believes in treating your pets as well as you treat yourself." Ellen's humanitarian efforts are well documented. Her show has raised more than $40 million and brought attention to various causes, including Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, global warming and animal rescue.

Earlier this year Ellen and Halo worked with the U.S. Postal Service to unveil the 2010 social awareness Adopt a Shelter Pet postage stamps to increase awareness about sheltered pets and encourage pet adoption and promote humane and responsible pet care. In conjunction with the launch of the stamps, Halo pledged to provide 1 million meals to animals in shelters waiting to be adopted.
