NEW ORLEANS (AP) — About 50 dogs, some of them abandoned by owners after the BP oil spill are on their way to new homes in Virginia, courtesy of an animal welfare group and actress Pamela Anderson.

Anderson, the honorary chairman of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, was among those walking the dogs at a news conference Monday at New Orleans' City Park.

Since the April 20 accident that sent millions of gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf, some southeast Louisiana animal shelters have reported large increases in the number of pets brought in. Many are brought in by people who have lost jobs or income because of the spill.

The shelter in coastal St. Bernard Parish reported 117 animals brought in in June, up from 17 in June 2009.

Displaced Gulf Coast Pets Will Find New Homes in New Jersey - Daily Finance

Images of oil-soaked birds and dying sea creatures are cemented in the public's perception of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster. Pets tell another story.

In the wake of the April 20 disaster and the economic catastrophe that followed for the Gulf Coast region, people living the affected areas have surrendered their dogs and cats in droves because they can no longer afford to care for them. ABC News reported that nearly 200 Gulf Coast pets given up by their owners have recently been euthanized.

A Chalmette, La., shelter pleaded for help on its website, saying, "Dogs and cats by the scores are being surrendered to the St. Bernard Shelter by residents who can no longer afford to keep them or who have to move but cannot take their pets with them. The shelter is overflowing with some wonderful animals who need new families to love."

To deal with the overflow, some shelters are sending animals out of state. The Humane Society of the United States and the Louisiana SPCA recently transported about 100 dogs from nine overwhelmed Louisiana shelters and rescue groups, including the one in St. Bernard, to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J. Most of the dogs will be available for adoption at St. Hubert's, and the rest will be placed with other New Jersey shelters.

Pamela Anderson Names New Pet Pooches Gina Lollobrigida, Brigitte Bardot
by Staff

Pamela Anderson has adopted two dogs.

Pamela Anderson, the former 'Baywatch' babe - who is the honorary chairman of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) - was left upset after discovering around 50 pooches were abandoned by their owners following the recent BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico so has given two of them a home.

Pamela - who has two sons, Brandon, 13, and Dylan, 11, from her marriage to ex-husband Tommy Lee - said: "My son was hoping we could take all 50.

"People can't afford to feed their families, so the family member that gets left behind and has to go is the pet."

The blonde actress has named her two new pets - which have been identified as Chihuahua mixes - in honour of fellow actresses Gina Lollobrigida and Brigitte Bardot.

On Monday (02.08.10), the dogs were paraded in New Orleans - which was badly affected by the April 20 rig explosion, along with the surrounding areas - in the hope of finding them new owners.

Bridgette Verdin of the Humane Society of Louisiana, which is working with PETA and several New Orleans area shelters to find homes for the dogs, said: "We couldn't find homes for all the dogs that were being surrendered before the spill." (c) BANG
