| Posted: 04 Aug 2010 12:45 AM PDT NEW ORLEANS (AP) — About 50 dogs, some of them abandoned by owners after the BP oil spill are on their way to new homes in Virginia, courtesy of an animal welfare group and actress Pamela Anderson. Anderson, the honorary chairman of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, was among those walking the dogs at a news conference Monday at New Orleans' City Park. Since the April 20 accident that sent millions of gallons of oil spilling into the Gulf, some southeast Louisiana animal shelters have reported large increases in the number of pets brought in. Many are brought in by people who have lost jobs or income because of the spill. The shelter in coastal St. Bernard Parish reported 117 animals brought in in June, up from 17 in June 2009. | Amazing Things Our Pets Could Do Besides Being Cute - Associated Content Posted: 04 Aug 2010 07:26 AM PDT I really love pets and I am really an animal lover. My family have owned several already especially when me and my siblings were still young. We have dogs, cats, fishes, hamsters, birds and even small turtles. Honestly, I miss having a pet again and would really love to own at least one-soon. This is not only for me but for my daughter who loves animals as much as I do. I came to understand that not only did they made me feel good especially my dogs and cats when I am down and out but they could also make you healthy. Sounds surprising? Not for me. I have always believed they could do that and so much more but I have no evidence to support my views about it until now. Here are some of the things that your pet could do for you and for your health. These are all based on studies that were already proven and some techiniques or methods already being used by some hospitals or clinics for physical and emotional therapies. Good for your heart Owning a cat or a dog (or even better owning both) can be your protection against some heart diseases, and can lower your risk of heart failures as well. Research of more than 20 years has shown the long term benefits of owning these pets. For those who do not own a cat, and never had is 40% more likely to die of heart of attack than those who did. Then another study for those people who own a dog showed a significantly better survival rate a year after an heart attack. Cat lovers out there are more luckier than us in terms of heart stroke . It seems that people who own cats have fewer strokes than those who don't. They say that cats have more calming and circulation effects on a person than other pets. Even researchers are not so sure why this could be, but it is also thought that since the owners focus their interests on their cats that it diverts them from thinking and doing stressful things.
