| Stay in or go out to help agency that aids pets - Times Union Posted: 05 Jan 2011 09:03 PM PST The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA is getting some help with its efforts to assist animals. Starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, the Blue Plate Restaurant, located at 1 Kinderhook St. in Chatham, will host a Post Holiday Party to benefit the Humane Society's new building project. Suggested donation for admission is $25 and includes a nonstop buffet from the chefs at the Blue Plate, live music, silent auction, raffle, cash bar, delicious desserts, local bands all night long and belly dancers. Musicians lined up to perform include Abby Lappen, Chris Neumann and Simple Machines, Bongo Roots with Azouke, Rich Hallenbeck and Steve Collins, and Bella's Bartok. In the last five years, the annual event has raised more than $40,000 for CGHS/SPCA, which serves more than 1,000 unwanted, abandoned, lost and abused animals every year. For those who cannot make the Saturday event but would like to raise a glass in support of the Humane Society, East Chatham Wines and Spirits, located at 1129 Route 295 in East Chatham, is offering two custom wines that will please both your palate and your conscience. The store has commissioned Millbrook Winery of Dutchess County to produce Cuvee Winston Churchill Chardonnay and Cuvee LoveYourDog Pinot Noir to help raise funds to assist animal organizations in the area. Partial proceeds from every bottle of wine purchased will be donated to the Humane Society/SPCA and AnimalKind, which promotes inexpensive spay/neuter programs to ease the pet overpopulation problem. "I couldn't be happier to combine two of my passions -- wine and animals -- to help local organizations provide for animals in need," said Mary Hack, owner of East Chatham Wines and Spirits. The two special wines are produced from California grapes that are shipped to the Millbrook Winery and are classic examples of each variety. The chardonnay has notes of crisp, green apple mingled with richer pear flavors. The pinot noir has aromas of red stone fruit with a touch of earth and spice. Both are wonderful food partners and make excellent gifts. To order the wines, contact East Chatham Wines and Spirits at 392-7926 or by e-mail at ecws@fairpoint.net. The cost is $15.99 per bottle for the chardonnay and $17.99 per bottle for the pinot noir at the store. Shipping is available to New York state addresses at an additional cost. The Humane Society is celebrating 55 years of caring for animals in need. The agency became chartered as an SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in 1977, gaining law enforcement authority to investigate and arrest individuals who intentionally harm animals. CGHS/SPCA has a zero-euthanasia policy for adoptable animals and has implemented many community-oriented services, from simple nail-trimming clinics to a pet food bank, feline low-cost spay neuter clinic, municipal stray dog housing, and community outreach and humane education programs. The agency receives no federal, state, or county funding.
