| Pets deserve care and a home - The Press-Sentinel Posted: Last year, despite the efforts of animal lovers, 826 dogs and 548 cats were euthanized by animal control officers in Wayne County. The animal control division of the Jesup Police Department is inundated with calls from all across Wayne County from people who have problems with neglected pets. Dog fights and dog bites are becoming more frequent. The folks at the Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), working with these officers, are saving some beautiful animals, but sadly too many are captured with too few people to adopt them all. There are some things all animal lovers and pet owners can do. The No. 1 priority of ARF is to spay and neuter pets. So many of the animals picked up by the animal control officers are small kittens and puppies which were not wanted and were simply allowed to wander off or were dumped somewhere away from the people who did not want them. Second, ARF relies on adoptive families to take in the dogs it picks up from the pound. The number that can be saved depends on the number of families willing to help out. An adoptive family keeps the dog until another family looking for a pet takes it home for good. When a family takes an ARF orphan home, then the adoptive family can take in another dog, and thus two animals are saved from euthanization. Another thing that is needed is a program to help save cats. At this time, ARF can save only dogs. Cats in the wild are more difficult to catch and are more expensive to vaccinate, but they are no less lovable.Additions to the Jesup pound include a new 15X15 "cat room" to provide for felines that are caught. This will make things less stressful on these cats, which, until the room is completed, are housed in a space surrounded by dogs. The officers and folks at ARF are to be commended for working for the people of this community. All animal lovers owe them a special debt for the way they go about their efforts to save as many animals as possible and to treat them all with the best care they can give. The shame is on those who do not have enough respect for the lives of these helpless creatures and condemn so many to misery and death. The following are comments from the readers. | Posted: Press Release Source: Petplan On Wednesday February 9, 2011, 10:00 am EST PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With more than 58 million pounds of chocolate and $350 million in flowers sold for Valentine's Day, Americans show their love with these gifts. Although a sweetheart may be the intended recipient of chocolates and flowers, it's important to remember that pets have quite a penchant for making these gifts their own. Chocolate and certain flowers are poisonous to pets and can cause serious illnesses – and even death – when ingested. A pet ingesting chocolate requires immediate emergency care – care that often results in significant veterinary bills. This Valentine's Day, Petplan, the nation's leading pet insurer, reminds all lovebirds to take precautions to keep their pets safe. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20101019/PETPLANLOGO) "Many pets suffer from what the veterinary industry refers to as 'dietary indiscretion' – eating things they shouldn't," said Dr. Jules Benson, Vice President of Veterinary Services for Petplan. "Around Valentine's Day chocolate is abundant and there is a greater risk for pets to ingest it. Many don't realize that even a small amount of chocolate can be fatal to a dog. And the darker and more concentrated the chocolate, the higher the risk to pets." Petplan offers the following tips to pet parents to help mitigate Valentine's Day danger for your pet(s):
