Salem, Mass. —

Northeast Animal Shelter has taken in pets from around the country and even Puerto Rico over the years.

This month, however, the Highland Avenue shelter has rescued dogs in unusual circumstances.

On Feb. 18, 13 dogs from Aiken County in South Carolina arrived in Salem. Northeast receives dogs from the Aiken SPCA periodically, but in the beginning of February, the Aiken SPCA shelter was devastated by a fire, leaving about 100 pets with nowhere to go.

The shelter is expected to stay closed until March while workers make repairs totaling about $250,000. In the meantime, the Aiken SPCA had a decision to make: What to do about the dogs it was sheltering, and the ones that have come along since the fire.

Salem's Northeast Animal Shelter stepped up to help.

"The dogs will stay at the Northeast Animal Shelter and meet with potential adopters from the area to find permanent homes," said Stephen Oakes, an adoption counselor and communications director at the shelter.

Another group of dogs and puppies came to Salem on Feb. 12 from Tennessee. The group of 20 pets arrived through Last Chance Highway, an acclaimed national program that's sponsored by Animal Planet.

Animal Planet has spotlighted the program through an eight-part, eponymous series. The focus of the show is on rescuer Shelly Bookwalter and pet-transporter Kyle Peterson, who liberate neglected pets from life on the streets and the death sentence of "kill" shelters.

"We have received dogs three times before through this program but [this] group will be the largest," said shelter worker Laurie McCannon. "The stories are amazing of how these dogs are rescued."

In addition to these new arrivals, Northeast generally has up to 100 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens waiting for new homes. The Highland Avenue shelter, founded in 1976, is one of New England's largest no-kill shelters.

McCannon said if residents want to adopt a dog, now is the time — don't wait.

"The recent New England whether has really slowed down adoptions," she said.

Many of the dogs it houses are strays that were rescued from Puerto Rico through the Saving Pets Across America. Others were rescued from "kill shelters" in Virginia, Indiana, Georgia, Alabama, West Virginia and Tennessee.

The Salem shelter celebrated its 100,000th pet adoption last August, as reported in the Salem Gazette.

Kelly Osbourne, Mom Sharon Osbourne Host Dog Show For Their Pets - Post Chronicle

Posted:

Kelly Osbourne, the 26-year-old presenter and her famous mother were inspired to compare the merits of their family pets after tuning in to watch the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show - a two-day event where animals are judged against their breed standards - which took place in New York earlier this month.

Kelly - whose father is rocker Ozzy Osbourne - tweeted yesterday (23.02.11): "Watching the Westminster dog show with my mum and we are screaming at the tv if anyone could actually see us right now.... Obsessed

"Now my mum and I are having our own Westminster dog show with all our dogs the winner is rocky my dad's dog. (sic)."

After enjoying their home-based contest, Kelly and Sharon continued watching the televised competition and couldn't help be amused by some of the dogs.

Referring to the spoof documentary 'Best in Show' - which follows pet owners and their dogs competing at a similar event - she wrote: "The more I watch this the more I realise how f***ing funny and dead on the movie "best in show" really is!

"Ohhhh my god there is an Australian sheep dog called beyonce! That is the funniest thing ever. (sic)"

Kelly has two dogs - a Pomeranian named Sid and a Doberman called Blue, who was a gift from her brother Jack to protect her when she moved into a new apartment alone - while Sharon and Ozzy are believed to have 12 pooches between them. (c) BANG
